Ocean University starts M.Phill and PhD programmes
The objectives of the Ocean University of Sri shall be to provide for University education in the fields of fisheries, ocean sciences, maritime technology and allied fields including disseminate knowledge relating to fisheries, marine and maritime sectors among persons who are engaged in fisheries and allied fields, this also involve on continuous professional development in the fields of fisheries, ocean sciences, maritime technology and allied fields.
The first Masters (MPhil) student was registered in 2022 for the research titled “Human dimensions of illegal fishing: behavioural insights for compliance and deterrence” this research was supervised by Dr. MFM Fairoz with the collaboration of University of NOVA Universidad Lisboa (Dr. Ana Nuno), Portugal ,University of Exeter, UK ,Zoological Society of London(Dr. Claire犀利士 Collins) and Oceans well Sri Lanka (Dr. Asha deVos). This research will build on existing regional partnerships and fieldwork within fishing communities in Sri Lanka and India to explore how alternative management interventions, including enhanced detection and policy modifications, can lead to improved conservation in the Indian Ocean. This will also address key knowledge gaps including inconsistency in perception of risk of detection whilst illegally fishing in Sri Lanka and a paucity of data concerning drivers for shark fishing in India. The next postgraduate student was admitted to follow up a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of “Bioaustics”in 2022. The title of the research “Is the Chagos Archipelago one of the last tropical refuges for cetaceans? Acoustic spatio-temporal diversity. This research is also supervised by Dr. MFM Fairoz with the panel of experts from the Oceanswell (Dr. Asha de Vos) Sri Lanka,University of St Andrews UK (Dr. Daniel Hariss), University of Plymouth UK (Dr. Claire Embling) , Zoological Society of London (Dr. Tom B Letessier)
