The uplifting the quality of staff, academic, administrative and academic support of the University is vital for the improvement of standards of the University. There should be internal unit to design and implement continuous trainings and development initiatives for enhance capabilities of all employee categories of the University.

The global scenario of higher education is changing rapidly and some of the challenges facing by the university academics which include publishing research papers in high impact factor journals, using technology in teaching and mentoring students. Administrative and academic support staff also faces numerous challenges. Hence, continuous professional development is essential for all university staff. As the University needs to keep employees up-to-date on the latest technology, it is vital to establish a staff development center in the Ocean University of Sri Lanka.

With this backdrop, Staff Development Center (SDC) of the Ocean University of Sri Lanka was established in March 2022 in order to bring about better collaboration among faculties and the university training colleges with regard to human resource development in the University. Except the Director, the center consists two coordinators representing both higher educational and vocational sectors with later mentioned structure.

The SDC will serve as key center for the different units of individual faculties in higher educational and the vocational sectors to promote and encourage staff development at the University. Further, Center activities can be promoted among other Universities

in the system. Also, the Staff Development Center is empowered to conduct required training programs at six target groups that include higher management, academic staff, executive and staff categories, academic support staff, technical officers, other non-academic staff and non-administrative staff.

At present the Staff Development Center conducts workshops and seminars to fosterage continuous development in existing staff with the contribution of internal and external experts. The programs conducted by the Staff Development Center are expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of all functions of the University and assist the University in achieving its goals, mission and vision.

Being the 1st Director of SDC of OCUSL, I acknowledge the trust kept on me to place here with a big responsibility and lavishly I invite you all to tighten hands with SDC for Better Performances in Your Life!!
