The Marine Science Education Center (MarSEC) at the Ocean University of Sri Lanka has been established with the primary objective of extending marine education beyond the confines of the university. Our intention is to address the educational needs of school children, fishing communities, and any other interested parties with a focus on fisheries, marine studies, and maritime affairs.

We are committed to providing electronic materials that offer comprehensive information on oceanic processes, marine biodiversity and ecosystems, fisheries, aquaculture, marine engineering, and maritime business. To disseminate knowledge effectively, we will conduct exhibitions and workshops for the general public, fostering awareness of marine science.

In addition to educational initiatives, we are dedicated to practical engagement with the community. This includes biodiversity explorations, camps, and fieldwork for those interested in hands-on experiences. Moreover, our commitment extends to environmental stewardship through initiatives such as beach clean-ups, plastic collection, and awareness programs on a nationwide scale. This is facilitated by our network of eight regional centers.

As the sole university in Sri Lanka dedicated exclusively to marine education, Ocean University boasts a team of highly qualified staff and dedicated students who actively contribute to the protection of the ocean and the promotion of ocean awareness. If you wish to engage with us or learn more about our programs, please feel free to drop us an email with your contact details, and we will promptly reach out to you.

Our works

  • Innovative Marine Education – Cultivating a passion for marine science through interactive and engaging programs, workshops, and curriculum designed for students of all ages. We aim to provide a platform for practical learning that introduces a sense of wonder and curiosity about the marine world.
  • Community Outreach – Actively engaging with local schools, communities, and organizations to raise awareness about marine issues. Through school awareness programs, community outreach initiatives, and partnerships with local stakeholders, we aim to build a network committed to marine conservation and environmental sustainability.
  • Exhibitions and Events -Hosting captivating exhibitions, events, and seminars that showcase the wonders of marine life, the importance of ocean conservation, and the latest scientific discoveries. These events aim to bridge the gap between academia and the public, fostering a sense of connection and shared responsibility.
  • Coastal Cleanup Initiatives -Taking direct action to preserve our coastal ecosystems by organizing regular beach cleanup events. Through hands-on participation, we encourage the community to take responsibility for their local environment, emphasizing the impact of plastic pollution on marine life and ecosystems.
  • Plastic Awareness Programs -Implementing targeted programs to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution in our oceans. Through educational campaigns, workshops, and initiatives, we seek to promote sustainable practices and reduce the use of single-use plastics within our community.
