The Fourth Research Symposium of the Ocean University of Sri Lanka (4th RSOCUSL) was virtually held at the Department of Fisheries and Marine Sciences in Tangalle attached to the Ocean University of Sri Lanka on 17 November 2022. Professor Weiqiang Wang; Executive Director of China-Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education and Research and Professor Enrico D’agostini attached to the Department of International Logistics, of Tongmyong University, South Korea joined the 4th RSOCUSL as Keynote Speakers. It was a great honor for us to have Professor Changsheng Zhang, Director of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Center (CSL-CER) and Deputy Director of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography who provided the co-sponsorship through the China-Sri Lanka Joint Center for the 4th RSOCUSL. The presence of Chancellor; Emeritus Professor Oscar Amarasinghe and Vice Chancellor; Professor Wasantha Rathnayake graced the symposium.

The broad theme of the research symposium this year is “Marine Research for the Prosperity of the Nation”. The 4th RSOCUSL provided a favorable environment for undergraduates, scientists, and professionals working in different disciplines to gather, present, and discuss various research findings to establish the roadmap for a blue economy. We created a platform for researchers to share knowledge and experience to find solutions for the current issues in the marine sector. With this goal, we were able to collect 59 abstracts for this year’s symposium. There were 31 oral presentations and 20 poster presentations. The presenters shared their research outcomes at different plenary sessions under the themes of Coastal and Marine Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Marine Engineering & Technology, Oceanography & Hydrography, Remote Sensing & GIS for Marine Environment, Maritime Transportation & Logistics, and Socio-economic & Marketing.

This annual symposium can be considered as one of the greatest achievements in the OCUSL academic calendar of this year and we are proud to conduct this symposium for the 4th consecutive year. On behalf of the Symposium Organizing Committee, Dr. Nesha Dushani; Chairperson of the 4th RSOCUSL expressed her sincere gratitude and appreciation for reviewers, session chairs, co-chairs, rapporteurs, authors & presenters, OCUSL administrators, academics, and non-academics who joined hands to organize this dream symposium into a reality.
